— Provenance

CITES-certified.
Fully traceable.

The international framework that governs every skin in our atelier.

Batavia Exotic Leather sources every skin under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora — an international agreement between 184 nations that regulates the trade of wild species to ensure their survival.

What CITES means for our pieces.

Python species used in our workshop — principally Python reticulatus (reticulated python) and Python bivittatus (Burmese python) — are listed under CITES Appendix II. This listing permits regulated trade under strict quota, traceability, and permit requirements designed to prevent over-exploitation.

In practice, this means that every pelt that enters our atelier arrives with an export permit issued by the Indonesian CITES Management Authority. Every piece of finished leather goods we ship internationally is accompanied by a CITES re-export permit specific to its destination country.

Why it matters.

A luxury object cannot be separated from the question of its origin. The CITES framework exists because, without it, species and habitats are lost. We do not regard the paperwork as friction. We regard it as the terms on which this kind of work is possible at all.

Our provenance is also our guarantee to you: the piece you carry is legal, traceable, and ethically sourced — from source population to quota management to atelier to your hands.

How it appears to you.

With every Batavia piece, you receive:

  • A CITES certificate of authenticity, uniquely numbered to the piece.
  • Export documentation issued by the Indonesian authorities.
  • A re-export permit where required by your destination country.

These documents should be retained by the owner — they are the official record of the piece's legal provenance, and may be required for inheritance, resale, or travel with the object across borders.

A note on our responsibility.

We have chosen to work with exotic leathers because the material is, in our view, among the most beautiful and durable in the world of fine goods. With that choice comes the responsibility to do it properly — under regulation, with full traceability, at a scale that does not strain the species or its habitat.

If you have any question about the provenance of any piece, we are glad to answer it.
